In this article you will get
to know each and every parts of a Espresso machine.
[Note : The espresso machines that I will show are the ones that are
commercially in use nowadays and not old historical ones]
If you want the information’s
on History and different types of Espresso machines then you can read the
article titled ESPRESSO MACHINE 101 which is also written by be in this website.
The
types of espresso machines most popular nowadays are the Semi automatic espresso
machines, Automatic espresso machines and Super/fully automatic espresso
machines.
The parts of these espresso machines are almost similar to each other including
the functions but the more advanced they are the more automation it tend to
have.
I’ll like to tell you an example on automation.
Brewing on Semi automatic espresso machines requires constant attention of the
brewer/ barista. Once the porta filter is fitted into the group head, form the
beginning to end of the espresso the machine has to be monitored by the user to
start and stop the brewing. But it an automatic and super automatic espresso
machine after the user presses the start button the machine itself turns off
the brewing after the exact amount of brewing is done in a systematic manner.
This was one of the example on automation. The newer machines have many more
automation and features to help the user.
Different Parts Of Espresso Machines :
In
this article I will be showing the names of each parts of a Automatic espresso
machine but fear not because almost every part of these three types of espresso
machines are the same along with its function. But if you would like to know
the slight differences in them then you can also read my article names ESPRESSO MACHINE 101 after you read this
article.
Now
I will explain what all this parts does and functions.
Cup Warmer
This
one is simple. As you can tell by the name its job is to warm the cups.
Knob
The
knob that you see in the picture is used to turn on the steamer/ steam wand. It
is also used to control the flow rate of water steam that comes out of the
steam wand. Some espresso machines have levers that does the same work.
Steam Wand/ Steamer
Steam
wand is used to steam cold milk for your Coffee drinks. Its main purpose is
that but it can also be used while brewing other drinks like chai, hot chocolate
etc. The amount of steam wand on a machine depends on the manufacture company
of the machines so you could see many or less amount of steam wand on a
espresso machine.
Hot Water Outlet
As
said from the name it is an outlet for hot water to flow out. The position of
the hot water outlet also depends on the manufacturer so don’t expect it to be
on the same place as shown in the figure.
Buttons
You
can easily see where the buttons are on the picture. The amount of buttons you
see on a machine depends on the type of the machine. If it is a Semi automatic
espresso machine then you will see at most only one button but if it’s a Automatic
and super automatic espresso machine there can be as many as 4 to 6 buttons.
Porta Filter
It
is the part of the espresso machine where we put ground Coffee. It is fitted
into the Group Head of the machine and that’s where the actual Coffee brewing happens.
There are two types of Porta filter and they are Single spout porta filter and
Double spout porta filter. The difference between them is the number of spouts
(From where Coffee flows out)
Group Head
It
is the part of the espresso machine where you put the Porta filter. Hot water
flows out of the machine at a constant machine pressure of 9 to 10 bars which
you can see on the Pressure gauge. The number group heads depends on the
machine. There can be only one group head or even 5 or 6 depending on the size
of the espresso machine.
Pressure Gauge
It
shows the overall pressure of the machine and the water pressure coming out of
the Group heads.
Drip Tray
This
is where the excess water or coffee drops. There is a tube connected with it
that flows out the excess liquid into a collection tank or bucket which you the
user can personally choose.
This below is a Super Automatic Espresso Machine
There
are other parts like the On/Off switch which are pretty self explanatory and I don’t
think you need to know about the inner parts of a espresso machine unless you
are a technician.
As this article is for people new to the machine I will not mention them in
this article.
If you have any questions or suggestions them you can leave a comment or contact me.
