Coffee Plant

Coffee falls under Coffea genus of plants. There are more than 100 species of Coffee plants all around the globe. The Coffee tree tends to average 3–3.5 meter (9.8–11.5 feet) in height. The Coffee tree starts to bear fruit after 3 to 5 years after plantation. Then It will continue to produce fruit for more 5 to 60 years (possibly 100) depending on the type of the plant, area and how well its cared for.

Among all the species Arabica Coffee species is the most famous Coffee species in the world and shortly followed by Robusta Coffee. They both alone account for around 80% of whole Coffee production.

Ripe Coffee Cherry



Coffee Cherry

You might have only seen Coffee beans that are brown in color. They are Coffee beans which have been roasted. Coffee Cherry is the fruit of a Coffee plant. We get Coffee seeds/beans from Coffee cherries which is used for Coffee production. The Arabica Coffee Cherry takes about 9 months to ripe where, as Robusta Coffee Cherries takes about 10 to 11 months to ripe.



Parts Of Coffee Cherry

These are the different parts of a Coffee cherry.

·        Skin : It is the outermost part of a Coffee cherry. Its dark red in color if it’s ripe.

·        Pulp : It is the inner part of the skin. It’s usually thick to prevent beans from damage.

·        Mucilage : It is the sugar like liquid present between Pulp and Parchment of a Coffee cherry.

·        Parchment : It is the hard cover outside the beans. It protects the seed from damage.

·        Silver Skin : It is a layer outside the bean which looks silver in color.

·        Green Bean : It is the edible part of a Coffee Cherry which contains most of the aroma, flavor and caffeine.
