What is Coffee roasting?
What are the different stages of Coffee roasting?
What are the difference between different Coffee roast?
In this article I will provide vague answers to these questions.
Green and Raw Coffee beans
need to be roasted before they can be used to make any kind of Coffee drinks. Roasting
makes the Coffee beans produce the notable aroma and flavor that we might all
be familiar with but depending on how much the Coffee is roasted it gives a
totally different character to Coffee beans. During roasting moisture, weight and acidity is
gradually lost from the Coffee beans as time progress in the Coffee roaster.
There are 4 types or stages of Coffee bean roasting and they are,
- ·
Light Roast
- ·
Medium Roast
- ·
Espresso Roast/
Medium Dark Roast
- · Dark Roast
Now we are going to talk about what the differences between them are. After finding out the differences you will be able to choose which Coffee roast is the best for you to consume.
Light Roast
Light roast Coffee bean is
light brown in color. It has no oil on the surface. Furthermore it has very
high acidity and low bitter taste.
Medium Roast
Medium roasted Coffee beans
are Dark brown in color. It also doesn’t have any oil on the surface. It has
slightly sweet taste than compared to light roast. It has balanced flavor,
aroma and acidity.
Espresso Roast/ Medium Dark Roast
Espresso roast Coffee beans
are rich dark brown in color. It has some oil on the surface of the Coffee
beans. It is bittersweet in taste. The flavor and aroma is much more emerged in
this roast while the level of acidity is low.
Dark Roast
Dark Roast Coffee beans are
shiny black in color. The Coffee beans are fully covered in oil. It is very
bitter compared to other roasts but it has no acidity.
[The
price of Coffee beans increases according to the roast. Light roast is the
least expensive where Dark roast is the most expensive.]
The simple explaination to this is because as we keep roasting the Coffee bean
moisture is lost which causes the Coffee bean to lose weight. Because of this
we have to use more raw beans to make let’s say 1KG of roasted beans. This
result in use of more raw resources so that’s why darker roasts tend to be
expensive.
