History of Coffee:
There is no
exact proof on how or when Coffee was discovered but there are many legends/stories
about its origin.
One
of such legends says that the Coffee plant was first discovered in the Ethiopian plateau by a goatherd named Kaldi in the 9th century (800
to 900 AD).
This story says that Kaldi first discovered Coffee when one group of his goats were much more energetic than the other ones. At first he didn’t know why this was the case so he inspected what the goats did and ate during the day that makes them so energetic. During his inspection he found out that the goats had been eating some ripe berries from a plant (It was Coffee).
Then
he got interested by this certain berries so he brought it home so he could
try. After getting it home he ate the ripe berries and got this sudden burst of
energy which kept him awake for an hour longer.
Then
he decided to share this new found thing to all the people in his village so he
showed them to the Head of the village. But the Head of the village refused to believe it and threw it on the fire.
After being thrown in the fire it started to produce this strange aroma. After the berries were thrown in the fire all that was left of it was a brown
seed which Kaldi picked up and crushed it and made it into a drink which had
much more energizing effect than eating the ripe berries.
And
just like that the Coffee drink is said to have been originated in Ethiopia.
After
Ethiopia it became more popularized in Yemen during the 15th century
by a man named Ahamad. During that time people used to first roast the Coffee
beans, boil it
and then brew it to make a drink named “Qahwa”
which meant prevent sleep.
This
one of the stories on how the Coffee drink originated.
